Iran, Afghanistan to cooperate on Lake Hamun

TEHRAN, Apr. 27 (MNA) – Head of Iran's Department of the Environment announced Iran and Afghanistan will cooperate within a joint program to save Lake Hamun.

Masoumeh Ebtekar said during the last visit of Afghan President Hamed Karzai to Tehran it was decided to set up a joint workgroup to study the condition of the Lake Hamun and prepare a joint program to save it.

“One of the main problems is the security issues on the side of Afghanistan, however we hope to solve the problem by cooperation and revive the ecosystem of Lake Hamun,” asserted she.

Ebtekar, while stressing the vitality of Lake Hamun for both Iran and Afghanistan indigenous local, reminded that the Lake is an international heritage with international values.

“Lake Hamun is very influential factor in region’s environment, climate, and local life,” said she, confirming the need of joint cooperation.

Lake Hamun is a shallow, marshy, lake (or lagoon) located in the Sistan and Baluchistan province of Iran and western region of Afghanistan.

The Lake is fed primarily by water catchments on the Afghani side, including the Harut River.
